Anyone who has been Veg*n for more than 5 minutes and has let peole know, will get this question asked of them. The answer is real simple…the same as YOU except no animal products are consumed.
We eat a variety of foods, and in many cases, MORE of a variety than Omnis (Omnivores aka meat eaters or Carnivore if you prefer). I know in my short time as a Vegan, I’ve had more of a variety than I did all my years as an Omni.
I’m also finding that cooking isn’t too bad! Before I had the intention, however it just seemed so tedius and many ingredients I used only once. Now I’m finding many recipes call for the same ingredients and some I’m quickly running out of!
Almost anything an Omni would eat, we can as well! Instead of meat, we may use TVPs (Textured Vegatable Protiens) or Tofu. Some Veg*ns refer to TVPs as Omni Subs.
Recipes that call for eggs, we may use tofu, banana or egg replacer (NOT Egg Beaters–those are still made out of eggs), depending on the recipe.
Many foods are what we refer to as “Accidently Vegan”, even these products we have to continually read labels as recipes change. Some manufacturers make it easy on us by listing if a product has Milk or Eggs in it. Of course, it’s not there to help us Vegans, but for those who may have allergies. Honey is *not* Vegan in many of our eyes and most products do not have this listed as an allergent warning. There are some Vegans who may consume honey, however, it is still a product of an animal.
For items that do not have this convenient listing, we have to read labels…more on that in another post!
However, if you have a Veg*n friend, ask them for some recipes or meal ideas. This will help them feel welcome in your home (or you in theirs)!
